Large parts of the Philippines have been devastated after Super Typhoon Haiyan (also known as Yolanda) hit the region on Friday 8 November. The scale of the destruction is unimaginable.
As of 14 November media reports indicate that the confirmed death toll stands at more than 2,300. The UN says some 11 million people have been affected, including many left without water, food or shelter. Many towns and villages have been cut off completely, especially in coastal areas in Leyte but also in northern parts of Cebu, Iloilo and Palawan.
For V.Ships this disaster is brought much closer to home as we estimate that upwards of 3000 of our serving seafarers are from the affected region, with many more of our colleagues at home on leave.
In response to the situation a 24 hour emergency contact centre and incident room has been established for our crew in Manila.
The management group of V.Ships, Pacific Ocean Manning Inc. (POMI), North Sea Marine Services Corporation (NSMSC), and Kestrel Shipping Inc. are reaching out to the families of our seafarers who were affected by the Typhoon.
