SEATEC LAUNCH NEW FUEL OIL PURIFIER ASSESSMENT Monday,Nov 30,2009

SeaTec has combined the strength of one of the largest fluid analysis laboratories in the world with its experienced marine engineers to provide a state of the art analysis and reporting service. This service comments on the condition of the fuel entering and leaving a purifier as well as providing and assessing the purifier’s performance.

The standard approach to the analysis of fuel oil has been to concentrate on bunker oil quality to ensure that the fuel meets the required standards (ISO 8217), as a legal requirement. However, ISO 8217: 2005 allows up to 80 mg/kg of catalytic fines (aluminium & silicon) whereas the engine makers recommend less than 15 mg/kg at entry to the engine. Unless the purifier performance is checked with each bunker received there is no assurance that the catalytic fines and water are being removed.

The SeaTec Fuel Oil Purifier Assessment programme will help to check the amount of catalytic fines that are removed by purification. The quality of the bunker oil will vary depending on the bunkering port, and, based on the analysis results, the purifier may require to be adjusted so that it does not revert to working just as a pump but continues instead to remove water and catalytic fines which could cause serious harm to the engine, increase wear and tear, and increase emissions through prolonged use.

SeaTec’s Fuel Oil Purifier Assessment consists of a series of specified tests undertaken on fuel samples from the purifier inlet and outlet to determine the unit’s efficiency in performing its functions of removing water, catalytic fines and other elements. The resulting information helps to continuously monitor and improve the performance of the purifier. The test, performed to the ISO 8217 standard, also gives an indication if the bunkered fuel is mixed with any other substance such as waste lubricating oil.

Every test result is manually checked and scrutinised by a Condition Monitoring engineer, and the improved purifier system reliability enjoyed by clients bear testimony to the effectiveness of the service. V.Ships Asia has been using the SeaTec Fuel Oil Purifier Assessment programme successfully since January 2009.

Benefits:

  • Helps to keep the purifier at its optimum range.
  • Prevents breakdown of machineries caused by low quality fuel.
  • Malfunctions and defects in centrifuge can be identified at an early stage and preventive actions can be taken accordingly.
  • Can be effectively used for bunker claims related to poor quality bunkers.
