THERE were few good things to come out of the Hebei Spirit case, which saw South Korean authorities jail the tanker’s senior officers over an accidental spill for which they were not responsible.

It was one of the more unjust cases of seafarer criminalisation, and one which saw the vessel’s shipmanager, V.Ships mount a spirited and ultimately successful campaign to have them released.

V.Ships president Roberto Giorgi now recounts a positive outcome from such a negative case, which became apparent when he addressed a Mumbai college for seafaring cadets. He has found that the Hebei Spirit has led to more young people seeking a position on his ships as the case’s publicity has made them aware that these owners will fight for them if they do happen to get into trouble.

It speaks volumes for V.Ships, which spared no expense and lobbied intensely to get their crew freed.
